When You Were Here

When you were here
your brown gaze shielding me
our thoughts sudden
wing to wing.

When you were with me
among these fleeting things
the walls were old relations
who told ancient tales
in the evening
as we drank our tea.

Now the walls are no shelter
they closed in on themselves in their silence
never to witness my fall
now the walls are plaster and cement
a strange foundation
clay doesn’t answer like death.

כאשר היית פה

כַּאֲשֶׁר הָיִיתָ פֹּה
וּמַבָּטְךָ הַחוּם מֵגֵן עָלַי
וּמַחְשְׁבוֹתֵינוּ נוֹגְעוֹת
כָּנָף אֶל כָּנָף.

כַּאֲשֶׁר הָיִיתָ עִמָּדִי
בְּתוֹךְ הַדְּבָרִים הַחוֹלְפִים
הָיוּ הַקִּירוֹת בְּנֵי־בַּיִת קְשִׁישִׁים
שֶׁסִּפְּרוּ מַעֲשִׂיּוֹת עַתִּיקוֹת
כַּאֲשֶׁר שָׁתִינוּ תֵּה.

עַכְשָׁו הַקִּירוֹת אֵינָם מַחֲסֶה
הֵם הִסְתַּגְּרוּ בִּשְׁתִיקָתָם
וְלֹא יַשְׁגִּיחוּ בְּנָפְלִי
עַכְשָׁו הַקִּירוֹת סִיד וָמֶלֶט
יְסוֹד זָר
חֹמֶר לֹא עוֹנֶה כַּמָּוֶת.
