Yehuda ha-Levi (1075? – 1141?)
Why Rise, O Sun, Why Show Your Face

Why rise, O sun, why show your face —
The daughter of Aviḥayil’s1 time is nigh,
With her radiant form she shames the sun,
And hinders the work of the host on high.
She chooses not to dwell in heaven,
But rather from myrtle fashions her sky.
