Is it Wine Week? Here’s one drawn from the “Third Gate” of Yehuda al-Harizi’s maqama, the Sefer ha-Taḥkemoni, in which the poet contemplates a glass of wine. I like this one.

Yehuda al-Harizi (1165? – 1234?)
Wonder at How Hail and Coals Are Joined

Wonder at how hail and coals are joined
How torrents of fire scatter from streams
Hammered out in delicate chains of gold
Cast in the thickness of the heart’s plain1
Nectars are they in pearlescent cups
That scatter fragments of light to the heavens
That slake your thirst with luminous dew and yet
Pour floods of flame into your mouth
As if the goblets themselves are the skies
With wine flashing like lightning within.
